WORK STATIONS
The work station of a person reveals his/her personality. How it is maintained, what steps are taken to make it attractive, is it kept clean or does it look like a whirl wind swept over it?
Most work stations have the pictures or figurines of Gods, which ever is the favorite of that person. Some people decorate their work stations with colorful flags, stickers and some artifacts. Some people believe in keeping their work stations bare, they can’t be bothered about getting anything to jazz it up. Some people just dump their bags and/or their lunch boxes on the table and pick them up while leaving. There will be nothing else there.
Most people do add a touch of color to their work stations. One lady I know has lots of stuffed dolls and figurines on her work station. She says she wants people to spend a couple of minutes admiring the things on display there. She does have some lovely pieces and she has also hung quite a few on the panels above her desk.
Some people manage to keep plants and also vases with flowers. Those who have more space, are able to do a good job of decorating, but some just waste the space. Many have papers strewn around, they keep frantically searching when they want a paper. It is funny to see them scrabling around the small space.
Work stations can actually elevate your mood. When you have done it up nicely, you feel good and in a pleasant frame of mind. Of course some say they have no time to breathe, they are so busy, so where is the need to beautify the place? Or where is the time to admire anything of beauty? How dry such people’s lives are!
I have kept a few beautiful things on my work station. I remove them minutes before I leave, lock them up to keep them safe. I prefer to keep my stuff clean and I do not want someone accidentally dropping anything and damaging it. There is a ritual every morning that I indulge in as soon as I come in. I remove them from the drawer, keep everything in place, take a few moments to admire them and then focus on my work. This ritual gets me into my working mode and I am able to focus well.
Mostly the women keep their work stations neat and colorful. Men normally do not bother. They may keep some functional stuff and not even look at them. Those who keep stuff on their workstations, do so to make it personal. The work station becomes theirs as long as they are there, so to give it an individuality and a personality, each one adorns it the way she wants.
And when some one comes and admires your collection, you feel good. Some people have a good eye for detail and color. Some have kept pieces that look antique and it does look good. Of course there will be calenders kept to score off dates. Most of the calenders have the pictures of movie stars, though mine has beautiful birds. Wonder what calender I will get next year?
Work station reflects a person’s personality and also becomes his/her own space. A kind of owning that piece of space. And I have seen people who will not tolerate anyone spoiling the place or keeping unwanted stuff there. I keep a paper napkin to hold the tea cup, I do not want tea stains on the work surface. Am I a neatness freak?
The heads of the department and heads of organizations will also keep the prizes won by them or the company on the work station. Some keep a clock and of course a bottle of water. That is inevitable. Some even keep their family photos to make the place even cozier.
One spends a lot of time at one’s work station, so trying to make it look pleasing makes sense. Why have uninteresting or uninspiring work station to work in? Stamp your personality on your work station and let it calm you or motivate you.
