COUNSELING IN CORPORATE PLACES
Personal counseling in corporate places can actually help a person deal with issues that will be interfering with the work. Issues that are personal and that which they have no clue how to manage. One to one counseling in corporates is not about taking on complaints about the work place, boss and the management. These things will have to be addressed to the management directly and the counselor does not become the messenger.
Personal issues can impact a person’s work performance. There can be personal stress that will impact the productivity of the person. His/her appraisal can be affected and this will further depress the person. Personal issues could be crisis of some kind, or stress due to conflicts in relationships and other issues.
Mainly the relationship issues are what causes the most stress. There will be conflicts that lead to depression. Or there could be burn out being experienced. This will definitely show in the performance and a person can end up losing the job. A person maybe bringing his personal issues to work and also taking his work pressures home. There will be blurring of boundaries and he will not know how to balance work and life.
A person may be suffering from a sense of low self esteem. He/she may feel inferior to the others in the team and not contribute in a befitting manner. There could be language problems, communication problems too. Effective communication skills can be learnt and it can smooth the way.
Inter personal relationships can also be discussed. If one person has problems with a colleague, or is unable to get his point across to the boss, these too can be discussed and coping skills imparted.
Some person may suffer from a medical problem, in which case proper referrals can be done. The worries regarding a medical problem of self or anyone in the family can be discussed. Venting of issues, fears and anxieties can be undertaken. A counselor will listen and guide if necessary. When a person is able to get his fears off his chest, it can give a lot of relief. Carrying around an emotional burden can be taxing.
Fears, anxieties and doubts can lead to a person not willing to extend himself or willing to take on new responsibilities. Here the listing of strengths and weakness of a person will help in realizing the potential of the person. How to improve the strengths and how to turn the negatives into positives. This is an exercise that gets a person to realize which areas of his personality he needs to work on. This provides an insight to the person and there are times when the person can see how his fears have held him back, in spite of having the necessary skills.
If it is upgrading of skills that is required, that too can be discussed. The places where such skills can be picked up and how to work towards gaining such skills too can be discussed.
Confidentiality is always provided. That is the ethical stand of the counselor. Many feel the counselor being part of the management, will convey all the secrets disclosed in the sessions to the management. But that is not the case. No one gets to see the notes of the counselor, unless the person is a threat to self or others. Then with the permission of the person, his family or management can be brought into the loop.
Counseling is a useful tool to unburden oneself. Just listening to your thoughts can give you an insight to your problems. And also being bogged down in the problem will not enable the person to see a way out. It could be just a shift in the thinking process that is required. Once this way is pointed out, things become clear and the person will be able to proceed on the path to recovery. Solutions are there for all problems, it needs to be searched out. And if one cannot do it by oneself, then seeking help is beneficial.
Once a person learns coping skills, then the quality of life will improve. He/she will be able to handle crisis in a better manner and this will improve the productivity also. He/she will be able to contribute more and relationships too will improve.
Depending on the problem, sometimes more than one session may be required. The person should be willing to co-operate and be determined to find a way out of whatever is bothering him/her.
