MOTIVATING FACTOR
Bosses have to constantly motivate their team members to perform better and better. The morale of the team players have to be kept high in order to get good results.
But if the bosses focus only on the figures that speak of results at the end of the day, and not on the persons behind them, then there will be a dip in the morale of the workforce. It is not only the figures that are important, it is the well being of the staff that is also important. It is this work force that is responsible for the ultimate figures.
When a team is highly charged and motivated, then the figures will keep coming in. A highly motivated team will surpass itself time and again. No challenge will be impossible and they will deliver at all times. But to keep this level of commitment, the boss has to provide the motivation.
A boss who is not approachable, who does not consider it important to interact with all the team members, will not inspire any confidence in anyone. A boss has to know all his team players, their strengths, weaknesses and also know what type of motivation will appeal to whom.
The team may perform well, but its members are all diverse and so getting them to bury their differences and focus on the job as a unit, takes some organizing. Sometimes the differences among the team players can be advantageous, sometimes detrimental. How to draw out the positives and sidestep the negatives, is the skill that a manager has to cultivate.
When a boss is always smiling and greeting his team members, the individual members feel counted. They realize the boss is acknowledging their presence and their contribution. When the boss knows and calls them by their names, it leads to bonding and appreciation. A boss who is heard but not seen, will not encourage his team.
The boss has to spot the shirkers and motivate them to perform. The boss has to spot the performers, and motivate them too. These performers may not go for monetary motivation, they may look for other forms of recognition and appreciation. The boss has to recognize this and reward accordingly. A holiday package for the whole family, use of a club membership, asking to make a presentation before an important client, travel abroad, etc will be the right kind of motivation for a consistent performer. Because when a person is motivated in the right fashion, he/she will not want to leave the company.
Newcomers have to encouraged to perform. Who has what talent only time will tell. At the same time the old timers have to be recognized too. They should not feel neglected and should be encouraged to mentor the newcomers.
A boss must be willing to discuss any personal problem his team member has. He can listen, and suggest options. A boss has to be empathetic and offer some objective viewpoints. When a team player realizes his problem is being heard, it is not being held against him, then he will feel motivated to perform better.
A boss must be willing to accommodate a team member if he/she has a medical problem. Give the necessary leave, give recommendations of good doctors and encourage him/her to work at his/her pace will go a long way in creating a good impression.
A boss must also be assertive. He/she cannot shirk from pulling up a reluctant worker, give sufficient time to reform, but not hesitate in asking the person to leave if necessary. A reluctant worker can pull the morale of the whole team down.
An aggressive boss will not have performing team. Only an assertive boss will have, and a true leader is always assertive and empathetic. A boss who is open to feedback will encourage healthy growth. If a boss does not like to hear anything negative, then there will be lopsided growth. A boss should be willing to go hands down and demonstrate. When the team leader shares the credit for performance with his team, and takes the blame for any problem, he will truly inspire his team.
It is people who perform. They need recognition and made to feel a valuable part of the company. Each person is performing a vital function. It may be a small job, but since it requires to be done, he/she is employed. And whoever performs well has to be motivated to rise up the ladder.
A good organization will make sure periodic training is imparted to its work force. Likewise time and place to unwind should also be considered. There is need to chill out, since all work and no play makes a person very dull.
Healthy discussions should be encouraged and this leads to everyone giving his/her inputs. The boss should keep his team members informed of the progress of the company and translate it into meaningful benefits for them. If the team players get the impression the company is performing well, but they do not get a proper share, this can lead to frustrations and attrition.
A leader normally has a vision. And if he can enthuse his members to share in it and deliver, then he and his team will always win.
