MONSOON
A co-counselor is to hold a meeting of some counselors at her residence next month. She wanted to reconfirm the date of the meeting. Her husband reminded her of the onset of monsoon. Apparently, when it rains, the street on which her house is located, gets flooded. She told me she will have to provide a boat for those who wish to come. And later she also suggested we hold the meeting on the boat!
Once I was caught in torrential rains when I visited the city of Cochin. It was raining non-stop and just sticking my head out of the house would get me wet and soaked completely. There was no respite and it was torrential rains. I have not come across such rains till now.
I always wonder how people live in places where it rains non-stop for days on end. The down pour will be torrential, and there will be no respite. People will long for the Sun, and cheer when it does come out. It could be a watery Sun, but it is welcome.
In our city, we do not have such torrential rains for days on end. It does break after maximum 3-4 days of rains. And since we are in the path of retreating monsoon, we get the Northeast rains, it is not so bad as the Southwest monsoon.
But this rain too brings with it all the creepy crawlies, they invade our homes because their homes are flooded. And it also brings with it mold, dampness, smell of wet clothes, water borne diseases, clogged drains, and disruption of essential commodities. Sometimes the schools declare holidays, the children are tickled pink, but it leaves the adults gnashing their teeth. The children have to be kept occupied indoors and that is not an easy task.
Rain also brings with it traffic jams, being late to offices/schools/colleges, visits to doctors and generally people feel wet and cold. Warm beverages are consumed in large quantities and you see road side tea stalls doing brisk business.
Rains also tend to keep people indoors during holidays. This is a good way for bonding, having family games played and some creative work done. Indoor games are available in plenty and games that do not need any equipment can also be played. Word game, story telling, hide and seek, etc. are all fun to play. Of course when these activities are fortified with hot snacks and beverages, then it becomes more cozy.
I love rain. I like to feel the rains soaking me and I love to walk in the rain. I love wading through clear puddles, and love the feel of rainwater on my face. At the end of the walk it will be hot water bath and then some hot drink.
Rains are essential for us to survive. There is no point in cursing it. Unless it rains, how will the Mother Earth soak up and become fertile again? If she is parched, how will anything grow? The various seeds that lie buried in her, have to come to life. There are so many livelihoods that depend on rain. Unless there is a good monsoon, there can be no sowing and reaping of food grains. And when the monsoon is deficit, then prices of essentials will rise.
Yes, there will be some discomfort. But since all this leads to better quality of life later, since it is an essential part of our lives, rains have to be welcomed. Just visualize Mother Earth all lush and green after a good rain. It is a sight for sore eyes. You will find small shoots struggling to break out of the grounds if you look carefully. You can find carpets of beautiful flowers, all colors, and all sizes. And the cool feeling after the scorching summer is surely welcome. All the tanks will be full, ground water will be recharged and rivers will fill up.
It is said that soaking in the first showers is good for health. So will you dare to do it? We have become so jaded, so caught up in the race to move ahead, we are forgetting to experience small joys of life. Have you seen a child play in water? He/she does it with so much glee. So allow the child in you to come out. Do not worry. You can always take precautions later. Fearing colds and fever, one does not experience the pleasure of a good soak in the nature’s showers.
Enjoy all seasons of nature. Be happy to be alive.
