His wife said her husband was a believer in fitness. He exercised everyday and had motivated her to join him in morning walks. He would constantly tell her by staying fit they would not be a physical burden on their son. And he proved his words.
She asked me why he died if he was so physically fit? What answer I could give her? What answer would satisfy her? His life span was over, he had to go.
Another gentleman too passed away when he was exercising. He was also in peak health, and his family too were shocked. So does it mean one need not bother with fitness since anyway one will die? Why not enjoy life and indulge in all cravings? There is only one life to enjoy and live, why deny oneself pleasures? One does not know how and when one will die. So why not live it up?
All great sentiments and philosophy. But being fit and healthy has its own benefits. Being fit keeps dementia at bay, one can recover from illness faster. Being fit does not mean one will not fall ill. The recovery can be faster when one is fighting fit.
There are health scares like cancer, paralysis, dementia, or Alzheimer. But these cannot be predicted and so there is no point in worrying over them. But to some extent one can avoid illness when one is healthy. And it does not take too much to be healthy. Just a focus on a few things everyday. This will lead to a lifetime of fitness and vigor.
Learning to focus on things in one’s control and having the courage to bring on change is a sign of maturity. And this leads to overall health. Do you know the Serenity Prayer?

Future health scares like cancer or paralysis cannot be predicted. One cannot change the course of life, there are certain things one will need to endure. So recognize these areas and let them be. Try not to worry or become anxious about falling prey.
There are certain areas where one can bring on changes. Helping one’s body and mind to remain healthy is one area that can be in one’s control. One can make sure physical fitness is maintained. Exercise, diet, relaxation, quality sleep, all need to be taken care of. What one can achieve, the focus needs to be there. Focus on diet is possible, partaking of nutritious food is possible. Making sure one has quality sleep for six hours is possible. Exercise is also a possibility. Any vigorous activity that appeals to one can be indulged in. It can be jogging, playing a sport, swimming, cycling, etc. All great ways of keeping fit.
Leisure time activities can lead to relaxing the mind and also lead to building new brain cells. When new brain cells are developed, it helps to keep dementia at bay. So one can keep one’s brain active with puzzles, learning new skills, honing skills acquired, participating in group activities, etc. Good social contact is also a key factor in health. One who withdraws from friends, one who does not have social contacts can age faster.
Laughter is a good medicine, so also a 4 am friend. One who is willing to listen and one who allows you to unburden can be a great boon. Periodic health check ups is a must and also taking care of one’s emotional and mental health. Learning to manage stress and anger can be helpful.
Humor has its own benefits. Try and have healthy relationships. Learn to allow the child within to come out, once in while. Indulging in fun activities can be a great way to relax. Volunteering also is a great way of feeling good. When you do something for the less privileged, a sense of peace pervades inside. This can combat the negative influence of stress hormones.
Maintaining good health is possible. Sometimes some health issues mandates taking of steroids. They are necessary. But steroids also have the effect of increasing body mass. Just blaming the medications cannot help. Alongside you need to make sure you exercise and follow a balanced diet to maintain your weight.
Many people allow their bodies to go to seed, turn obese, and develop health issues. They blame stress, relationship issues, unhealthy lifestyle, lifestyle diseases, genes, pollution, etc. With these very same issues there are people maintaining their health. One needs to look internally for motivation, not be ready to blame the world and its uncle.
Maintaining health does not mean being thin or aiming for a slim figure. That can be attained with unhealthy diet, which is a health scare in itself. The definition of health is given by WHO; it is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Know that health is a choice, one that needs to be focused on everyday.
