He has been made a team leader. There are several such teams in the office, and so a few team leaders are present. This young man has the habit of ticking off non-performers in the open. He calls up the person who does not produce the required numbers and asks for explanations. This is done in the open, and the whole office gets a free show.
The person pulled up will squirm, and have no answers. Being pulled up by your boss is bad enough, having the whole office witness your discomfort can be distressing too. Not all are able to put up a brave front, and when young ladies get pulled up in this fashion, the distress is more.
He does not use abusive language. It is just that his tone is loud, and quite intimidating. He certainly needs to look for words that convey his displeasure without hurting the person’s feelings. And certainly not in front of the whole office. The layout of the office is such that there are no cabins on the floor, it is open seating. So if one raises his/her voice, the whole office looks up.
He was asked to meet the counselor and he did. He is a great worker, does have a lot of positive qualities. He obviously has potential, otherwise he wouldn’t be made the team lead. This was pointed out to him. And also the fact that even if one member of his team does not produce the required numbers, the whole team’s performance is affected. So his position is quite delicate, he needs to justify his promotion. The counselor appreciated his position. But could he do something about his style of pulling up the erring members?
He agreed he had a problem here. He also understood how embarrassing it is for the member who is being pulled up in front of the whole office. And he agreed he needed to address his communication style. He was asked to think, learn to substitute certain words and also bring down his tone.
His ticking off not only created discomfort for his team member, it also disturbed the whole office. Especially when a female member of his team was being pulled up. Some kind of sympathetic vibes were being released.
It was suggested he could work on his communication. He needed to convey that shirking will not be tolerated, but also in an assertive manner. Because at the end of the day, if a person did not perform consistently, he/she will be asked to leave. He also had the option of addressing major defaulters by taking them to a conference room and asking for an explanation. Maybe there is an explanation. And this person wouldn’t want to express it in the open. He agreed this is also possible.
He has a reputation of delivering, so the office higher ups were impressed. It was suggested he build up a reputation among his team that he is the best team leader. And the message should be that if you want to work and grow under a team lead, it has to be him. He appreciated all that was addressed to him. He understood he was not being pulled up, but being counseled to improve himself. Personal growth leads one to greater heights, not only on the professional front, but in personal life too.
He agreed to work on bringing in changes.
